The Super Eagles have vowed to lift the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) trophy in honour of the four Nigerians who died while watching their tense semi-final match with Bafana Bafana of South Africa.
Captain of the national soccer team, Ahmed Musa, who made the remark at a solemn session by the Super Eagles players and officials to mourn the deceased on Thursday, said the team would honour the memories of the deceased by winning the AFCON trophy for them and Nigeria on Sunday.
Those who died while watching the tense AFCON semi-final match between Nigeria and South Africa on Wednesday night match included a former legislator, Chief Cairo Ojougboh, the deputy Bursar of Kwara State University, Ayuba Abdullahi, Samuel, a Corps member serving in Adamawa State and a Cote d’Ivoire based Nigerian businessman.
A minute silence was observed in honour of the deceased while a member of the Super Eagles, Chidozie Collins Awaziem, led a prayer for the repose of their souls.
Nigeria will face host country Cote d’Ivoire on Sunday in the 2023 AFCON final.
