Vetland Senior Grammar School, Ifako-Ijaiye, has emerged winners of the 2024 Annual National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS) Quiz Competition in Lagos State.
Vetland clinched the first position with 60 points, Government Model Senior College, Ikorodu, got 50 points to place second, while Ilupeju Senior Grammar School finished third with 40 points.
The competition held on Thursday at Co-Curriculum Service Department of the Lagos State Ministry of Education was administered by Dr Oluwasola Omoju, the Quiz master and head team of NILDS team to Lagos.
It was centred on legislature, democracy and governance affairs.
Mrs Aminat Sulaiman, Lagos State Coordinator of NILDS, said that the objective of the competition was to provide students with knowledge on legislature.
“The idea is to broaden the knowledge of students on the history, practice and procedure of the legislature and encourage deeper understanding of democratic governance.
“The competition will also stimulate the interest of students in politics and make them more proactive in matters relating to legislature and democracy,” she said.
In her remarks, Mrs Funmi Akinfolarin, a Deputy Director in the Lagos State Ministry of Education, described the programme as laudable.
She congratulated the winners and other participants.
Akinfolarin urged the winners to make Lagos State proud at the zonal stage scheduled for Oct. 31.
“They all did well, but there is still room for improvement, and for the winners, I believe that at the zonal level, they are going to do a lot better and qualify for the grand finale.
“The competition has brought enlightenment to the students, particularly on political matters, national issues and state affairs, they are more informed now,” she added.
Mr Obafemi Lawal, a teacher at the Government Model Senior College, was unhappy that the school emerged second.
“We missed the first position, but it is a lesson for us, we will go back and start preparing for next year’s edition from now,” he said.
Mr Taiwo Olaniyan, a member of the NILDS coordinating team, applauded the participants.
He said that they all came prepared and exhibited knowledge (NAN).
