The renewed mandate of the Executive Vice Chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) , Prof. Umar Danbatta has gingered him to take some decisive steps to strengthen the regulatory activities of the commission.
Professor Umar Garba Danbatta was recently reappointed as the Executive Vice Chairman, Nigerian Communications Commission for another five years by President Muhammadu Buhari in the effort to consolidate the gains made in the telecommunications sector in line with the National Digital Economy Policy and Strategy.
Industry sources claim that Professor Danbatta’s reappointment was based on the recommendation of the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Dr Isa Ali Ibrahim (Pantami) in line with the Nigerian Communications Act, 2003.
Since his reappointment, Danbatta’s moves had already manifested in the launching of the new Strategic Management Plan (SMP) and the redeployment of four directors to ensure optimal performance of regulatory measures.
SMP 2020-2024 which was launched in Abuja last Tuesday as a strategic move by the Commission to accelerate the national digital economy vision of government in the next five years.
An appendage to that move is the swapping of positions at the senior management level of NCC which industry sources said is geared towards injecting fresh ideas and invigorate the much desired measures particularly in the compliance of regulations relating to national security, the issue of improperly-registered Subscriber Identification Module (SIM) cards, protection of consumers rights and interests, as well as to ensure effective management of the Commission’s reputation.
The Management staff who swapped positions to ensure optimal performance in the new dispensation are the Director, Compliance Monitoring and Enforcement Department, Mr. Efosa Idehen; Director, Public Affairs Department, Dr. Henry Nkemadu; Director, Consumer Affairs Bureau, Dr. Ikechukwu Adinde, and Director, Research and Development (R and D) Department, Mr. Ephraim Nwokonneya.
Idehen, reputed for the landmark fine imposition on MTN, is now Director, Consumer Affairs Bureau, while Nwokonneya now seats comfortably as the Director, Compliance Monitoring and Enforcement Department. Adinde takes charge as the commission’s public relations Director, while Nkemadu now heads the Research and Development department of the commission.
