President Muhammadu Buhari has extended his well wishes to Muslims as they begin this year’s period of fasting, known as Ramadan.

The Islamic fast lasts for either 29 or 30 days, depending on the sighting of the moon.

In his message, President Buhari encouraged Muslims to use the season to exhibit the best and finest qualities of Islam through personal conduct, rather than just words.

“Let us utilize this opportunity to apply the best teachings of Islam in our daily lives, such as kindness and love for humanity.

“This is a time for introspection, increased fear of Allah, and the avoidance of all actions that harm humanity, ” he said.

Buhari explained that Ramadan involves abstaining from food and drinks from sunrise to sunset, which unites both the wealthy and poor in the experience of hunger, thereby strengthening the relationship between those who have and those who have not.

“As we embark on this 30-day period of fasting, we must remember that Ramadan is not just about abstaining from eating and drinking, but it also serves as a reminder to abstain from all forms of wrongdoing and transgressions that cause harm to humanity,” the president stated.

“I am especially conscious of the activities of traders who artificially increase the prices of their goods, including food, at the beginning of each month of Ramadan. This type of exploitation goes against the spirit of Ramadan and Islam,” Buhari added.

The president also urged Muslims to share food and drinks with those less fortunate, as the act of sharing blessings with others is rewarded by Allah with multiplied rewards for good deeds.
