At least 16 passengers, including newlywed couple, escaped death in an auto crash on the Third Mainland Bridge of Lagos on Saturday.
The accident involved a commercial bus and a mini truck which had a head-on-collision near the Ilaje end of the 11.8-kilometre-long bridge.
The couple were returning to the mainland from the Ikoyi Marriage Registry when the accident occurred at about 3:00 p.m.
Eyewitnesses told journalists that the commercial bus had a brake failure while on high speed and rammed into the slow moving truck at the spot.
16 passengers – 11 women and five men sustained injuries and were quickly rushed to the Lagos State Trauma and Emergency Centre along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway for medical attention.
Two other victims were trapped in the wreckage and suffered fractures to their limbs.
The passengers were extricated by emergency responders, including men of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), and thereafter rushed to the Gbagada General Hospital for treatment.
Other agencies involved in the rescue operation were the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASABUS), the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), police, and Lagos State Task Force
