Lagos Compensates Victims of Bus-Train Collision

Lagos State Government has pledged to compensate victims of the bus-train collision that occurred on March 9, 2023.

In a statement released on Tuesday, the state government promised to provide employment to one employable child of each of the deceased victims and a concessionary scholarship to one of their biological children.

A nine-member committee was set up by the state to investigate the accident and determine appropriate compensation packages for the affected families and state government staff.

The committee recommended death benefits from the Group Life Insurance for families of the deceased, employment for one employable child of each of the deceased victims, and a concessionary scholarship for one of their biological children.

Injured accident victims were also recommended to receive full insurance claims as compensation, while staff victims with permanent disabilities will be compensated in accordance with the Group Life Insurance Policy of the state.

According to the report submitted by the committee, the accident resulted in six fatalities out of 102 passengers involved in the collision, with 85 passengers on board the staff bus and 17 on the train.

The state government has established a case of manslaughter against the driver of the staff bus involved in the accident, Oluwaseun Osinbajo, who will be charged to court once he has recovered.

The final decision on the committee’s recommendations will be taken by the state executive council, and further directives will be communicated by the Head of Service, Mr. Hakeem Muri-Okunola.
