Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu has called on members of National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) deployed for primary assignments to actively engage with local communities to address challenges and contribute to meaningful projects.
Sanwo-Olu made the call in his address at the closing ceremony of the 2024 Batch ‘C’ Stream 2 orientation, held at the NYSC Orientation Camp, Iyana-Ipaja, Lagos.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the batch, comprised of 5,316 corps members, were camped for the three-week orientation course, which featured various activities that prepared them for the task ahead.
According to Sanwo-Olu, the orientation camp has been a microscopic representation of Lagos State, a melting pot of culture, language and traditions.
“As you bid farewell to the orientation camp and venture into the field, remember that the road ahead is full of challenges and possibilities; you must embrace the challenges that come with communal living.
“You have been immersed in a transformative experience, learnt to adapt to new environment, networked with fellow compatriots from diverse backgrounds, learnt new skills, new perspectives and determination to create positive impact.
“This experience has prepared you for the task ahead and instilled a deep sense of unity that transcends ethnic, cultural and regional boundaries.
“Embrace the challenges and exemplify lessons of discipline, perseverance and teamwork that you have imbibed during your time in the camp.
“I am confident that you will carry this knowledge as you contribute to development of Lagos State and Nigeria at large,” he said.
Sanwo-Olu, who was represented by the Permanent Secretary of Ministry of Youth and Social Development, Mrs Toyin Oke-Osanyintolu, charged Lagos residents to support the corps members to have a memorable service year in the state.
In her remarks, Mrs Christiana Salmwang, State Coordinator, NYSC, Lagos said that the corps members had been exposed to workshops, seminars and would make meaningful impact in the development of Lagos State.
Salmwang said that the prospective employees\ had been exposed to workshops and seminars alongside other orientation courses, adding that their diligence and commitment to activities was commendable.
According to her, the young compatriots have demonstrated a commendable sense of discipline, humility and patriotism.
She said that their diligence and commitment to camp activities contributed immensely to the success of the orientation course.
“Through this period, these young, vibrant and energetic Nigerians have undergone a well-structured programme, including citizenship and leadership training, motivational lectures, social activities, self actualisation and personal development.
“Notable is the Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) programme which has empowered them with entrepreneurial skills for self-reliance, given the realities of the job market,” she said.
Some corps camp directors were recognised for their outstanding performances and given certificates of commendation,
They are Tranquil Ayanleke, Williams Oyindamola and Ogbebor Oluwatimileyin, while Ojimi Abosede emerged as the best platoon inspector.
