Five persons killed, houses burnt in Lagos gas explosion

Five persons were killed while 44 buildings, 89 shops,  one school, one event centre and a church were affected in the wake of a gas explosion at Candos Road, Baruwa area on the outskirts of Lagos  this morning.

Early reports claimed that six persons were rescued with different degrees of injuries following the gas explosion which the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) reported as starting around 5.40 a.m. today  when an LPG tanker was in the process of discharging at a gas plant station in the area.

Sources said the explosion occurred in the generator area which was said to be on during the discharge of the tanker’s content. A secondary gas leakage from the underground tank reportedly took place and stretched the combined efforts of   officers of the   Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service from  both Bolade and Agege Fire stations before the situation was  put under control.
