Effective from April 1, 2023, commuters will resume full payment of fares on government-owned buses, including BRT, standard, and FLM buses. This comes as the state government discontinues the 50% discount previously offered on bus fares.
In February, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu approved a 50% reduction in bus fares to alleviate the hardship caused by fuel scarcity and cash crunch in Nigeria. However, in a recent development, the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) announced that the reduction in prices had come to an end.
LAMATA stated that fares of state-owned buses would return to a 100% rate on April 1. The notice read, “With effect from Saturday, April 1, bus fare on all regulated buses – BRT, standard, and FLM – shall revert to 100% rate.”
The decision to discontinue the discount was made following the Supreme Court and Federal Government’s pronouncements on the use of old notes alongside the new notes and the return of stability to the system.
