Miss Maria Soniregun, Female Speaker, Lagos State Youth Parliament, has called on Girl-Children to be intentional about their growth and make themselves significant in nation building.
Soniregun, said this on Friday, spoke in commemoration of the 2024 International Day of the Girl-Child with the theme, “Girls’ Vision for the Future”.
“We join the rest of the world to mark this year’s International Day of the Girl-Child today and celebrate our girls in Nigeria.
“I will like to remind you that you have the ability and potentials to become what you want to become in life, be consistent in your efforts and never underestimate yourself.
“Keep shinning and pushing boundaries, knowing that your contributions are very significant, as the nation is counting on you to contribute your quota in nation building,” she added.
“Embrace your uniqueness and individuality, and never compromise on your values and aspirations.
“Stand strong against societal vices like premarital sex, early marriage, peer pressure, cultism and any behaviour that seeks to undermine your potential”.
The speaker assured that the government would create an enabling environment where the girl-child will reach her full potential in the career of her choice, irrespective of status.
She also, encouraged girl-children to be confident of themselves and expressive, adding that they must not allow themselves to be intimidated by anyone.
The International Day of the Girl-Child, a United Nations observance, supports more opportunities for girls and increases awareness of gender inequalities faced by girls worldwide as a result of their gender.
It’s globally observed annually every Oct. 11, to celebrate, recognise girls’ right and the unique challenges they face around the world.
