Ban Lift: Twitter Restates Commitment To Serve Nigeria



In the wake of the lifting of the ban on Twitter early this morning,  the  American microblogging and social networking platform, restated its commitment to serve its customers with due diligence. 

‘’We are pleased that Twitter has been restored for everyone in Nigeria. Our mission in Nigeria and around the world, is to serve the public conversation. We are deeply committed to Nigeria, where Twitter is used by people for commerce, cultural engagement, and civic participation,”  a statement from Twitter said.

Director-General of the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) who also doubles as  the Chairman, Technical Committee Nigeria-Twitter Engagement,  Mr  Kashifu Abdullahi, announced the lifting of the suspension in a statement this morning.

 “The Federal Government of Nigeria (FGN) directs me to inform the public that President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, has approved the lifting of the suspension of Twitter operation in Nigeria effective from 12am tonight, 13th January 2022.

“The approval was given following a memo written to the President by the Honourable Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Prof Isa Ali Ibrahim’’, the statement said. .


The Muhammadu Buhari administration placed a ban on in June 2021, after accusing  the microblogging site of working against Nigeria’s interest.   

 Twitter users had to use a Virtual Private Network (VPN)  to access the social media platform while the ban was in force .
