The Association of Mass Communication Students, Trinity University (TU), Yaba, on Sunday sensitised undergraduates on use of social media to earn legitimate money.

Mr Eric Madaki, the President of the Association led the one-day sensitisation campaign organised by the association at the institution’s Campus on Sunday in Lagos.

The event was tagged, ‘Creative Hangout’ with the theme ‘The Power of Creative Collaboration’.

It featured content creators, influencers, YouTubers, fashion designers, celebrities, actors and stakeholders in the entertainment industry.

Madaki said the sensitisation was organised to showcase various potentials for young people in the entertainment industry.

He said that some people were, unfortunately, in the social media for wrong reasons.

According to him, it is possible for young people to use the social media to earn legitimate income.

”It’s rather unfortunate that some people are in the social media for wrong purpose which has led to scam, yahoo and other anti-social activities.

”So, this event is to educate, inspire and motivate our youths, especially the upcoming in the entertainment industry, that they can make good use of social media to entertain, interact and above all make a living.

”I feel somehow fulfilled having this first edition under my leadership; the speakers have thrown more light and shared their wealth of knowledge which enriched the students to be better content creators,” Madaki said.

Earlier, Dr Olajide Fadeyi, Head of Mass Communication Department advised the students to take advantage of the platform to develop their skill in the sector.

Fadeyi said, ”White collar jobs are no longer easy, so rather than waiting for employment in a formal environment, you can bring to bear knowledge gained from this programme.

“The world is dynamic now, it is no longer about certificate but what you can do, therefore, embrace knowledge and put it to action.

“If it’s cooking or any, turn that skill to content for others to learn from. By so doing, they will be earning some money that can be a plus in their capacity- building.”

Similarly, Veekee James, a fashion designer, who commended the association for the initiative, urged students to endeavour to distinguish themselves in their fields.

”You need to go the extra mile and do something different that can stand out among your colleagues; be creative and try to sell yourselves through your content on social media.

”Most importantly, be focused and always try improve your skills, seek for innovations and things that people want; these are areas that can add value and money to your life,” she said.

The event had a panel session where speakers in various areas of content creation shared their experiences.

There was a question and answer session where students also interacted with the discussants. (NAN)
