2021 Merit Award: When Old Grammarians Celebrated Their Own

Shouts of ‘Up School, Up Boys’ rent the air  as the old boys from different class sets, hugged and  back-slapped each other in the spirit of camaraderie throughout the five-hour programme of the 2021 Merit Award and Fund-Raising Ceremony of the  Old Grammarians’ Society (OGS), the umbrella body of Old Boys of CMS Grammar School, Bariga, Lagos.

The yearly event is a compilation of a Honours’ roll of distinguished Grammarians who have , in one way or the other, contributed to the progress of the school. Since 2001, awardees included eminent personalities including late Chief TOS Benson, Chief Ernest Shonekan, Chief Sobo Sowemimo, Major General V.B. Williams,  late Prof. Ayodele Awojobi and Late Oba Oyebade Lipede.  

Saturday’s  event which  took place ` in the school Hall on December 18, 2021, under the chairmanship of Mr. Onotu Okpue, was full of  fun and gaiety. Okpue briskly  harped on the need for the old boys to rally round and continue the ongoing  efforts to ensure the  infrastructural enhancement of the institution as well as follow up on the Technological development which started with the establishment of the e-library.  

The event began with a tour of the school by the old boys, including  the awardees   and guests to appreciate the efforts of the old students in changing the face of the school through an improvement and upgrading of   the facilities.  

Current OGS President, Mr Olu Vincent, in his remarks, commended the efforts of the old boys, particularly in the task of ensuring the full computerisation of the school and ensuring uninterrupted power supply  with the installation of solar power panels.

Vincent appealed for concerted efforts/funds to embark on the secretariat project as well as the building of a  stadium  . Mr. Femi Dada, one of the awardees, also appealed to the old boys towards the computerisation and solarisation projects  going on in the institution.

At least 28, old boys across class sets were beneficiaries of the awards. They included Olumide Babatunde  Duggan; Late Justice Olumide Olusanya  Omololu; High Chief Akin Disu; Barrister Adedapo Fashanu; Mr. Adetunji Goyea; Mr. Ladi Oluwole; Mr. Tolutope Agbesanwa; Mr. Femi Dada; Mr. AdedoyinOmogbehin; Mr. Olatunbosun Akinremi; Barrister Olawale Ojo and Mr Olugboyega Oyewole.

Others were; Mr. Jimmy Simeon Olaghere; Mr. Olufunsho Okunowo; Mr. Folaranmi Ogunlari; Architect Wale Adekaiyajo; Mr. Babatunde  Oshilaja;Mr. Olukayode Martins; Prof.Akintunde Okeniyi; Mr Ayodeji Babatope; Chief Olusegun Adeigbe; Eng, Samuel Olatunji; Dr. Nathaniel Obule; Hon. Babatunde David; Mr. Adedayo Alaka; Mr. Akeem Alabi; Eng. Tune Taiwo; Mr. Amosu Olubunmi Gbemenu


Generational Awards went to  the families of Late Prince Babafunso Adebayo Adeyemi; Macaulay and Adedayo Adeyemi. Class set Awards  went to  the 1995 set with the 1982/1984 set
